House Main Door Vastu: Understand Position Before Choosing a Direction

A facing label is only the beginning. Understand the opening, the map and the conditions before choosing an entrance or a remedy.

A broad “north-facing” or “south-facing” description is not enough to assess the main door of a house. The useful starting point is the position of the actual opening on a verified plan, the direction information used to locate it and the way the household enters and moves through the property.

This matters when you are choosing an entrance before construction. It also matters when an existing doorway has attracted conflicting advice. Two people may appear to disagree about the same door while using different plans, boundaries or mapping methods.

Make the location and method clear before comparing recommendations. Here is how the entrance-mapping material in my MVDE course can help you ask more precise questions.

Name the entrance you are discussing

An independent home can have a plot gate, a principal building doorway, another entrance used from parking and a service door. Label them separately. Note which opening the family actually uses and which are occasional, closed or decorative.

A house-facing description, the direction someone looks while stepping through a doorway and the doorway’s mapped position are also different pieces of information. State what a direction label refers to rather than assuming everyone means the same thing.

These are contemporary scope questions: which boundary, which opening and which use are being reviewed? They follow the Foundation principle of establishing location and actual use. They do not imply a universal rule that one entrance always overrides all others.

For an apartment, there is an additional distinction between the private dwelling and shared building access. The flat-entrance guide addresses that situation separately.

How the course’s 32 entrance divisions work

The entrance slides describe a full circle divided into 32 equal angular sectors. The arithmetic is 360° ÷ 32 = 11.25°. The teaching labels these within four groups, N1–N8, E1–E8, S1–S8 and W1–W8.

This adds detail to a broad cardinal description. It gives the reviewer a vocabulary for locating an opening within the chosen map. The precision of the division is a geometrical fact; it does not establish that an associated prediction about someone’s life has been scientifically demonstrated.

One slide makes a particularly useful distinction. It compares rays drawn at equal angles with marks spaced at equal lengths along the walls of a rectangle. Those procedures do not generally produce the same boundary positions.

Two different things a diagram may divide
MethodWhat is equal?What to clarify
Angular overlayThe angles between rays from a declared centre.Which boundary, centre and orientation reference were used?
Wall-length divisionsMeasured segments along a wall or side.Which system calls for these divisions, and how are positions assigned?

Within the course’s angular approach, dividing each wall into eight equal lengths is not an equivalent shortcut. When two assessments differ, first ask whether they used the same method. A different drawing procedure can create a different label before any interpretation begins.

Keep the classical grid and modern overlay identifiable

Bṛhat Saṃhitā discusses entrance positions in the context of square plans divided into 81 or 64 parts. Its perimeter positions should not silently be treated as 32 equal angular sectors. The geometrical context is explicit in Iyer’s translation, 53.42, 53.55–56 and 53.71; compare 52.42, 52.55–56 and 52.69 in the linked Sanskrit edition.

A recommendation should therefore identify both its mapping procedure and its interpretive source. “Classical teaching,” “modern angular practice” and “my MVDE synthesis” describe different contributions to the explanation. Keeping them visible makes the reasoning easier to assess.

The older course charts also contain differing evaluations for the N5 label. I have not combined those differences into a single universal ranking here. The newer Foundation material provides the public guide’s central discipline: establish conditions and evidence, and treat an association as an interpretive lens.

Two openings on the same side can raise different questions

Illustrative planning example · not a client case

Imagine a family comparing two possible entrance positions along one side of a proposed house. Both options receive the same broad facing description. One opens into a short entrance space; the other brings regular movement through a room intended for a quieter activity.

Begin with the same current plan for both options. Identify their positions using the declared method, then record the proposed movement, adjoining uses and design constraints. This allows the Vastu interpretation and the practical layout discussion to refer to the same information.

The next step may be to retain one proposal, refine the layout or ask the architect to clarify a detail. It is unnecessary to attach a promised financial or family result to either opening to make this a useful decision.

TSV’s Private Blueprint Review contributes documented Vastu observations and explained priorities while design choices remain open. Your architect develops the drawings and coordinates the relevant design requirements.

For an existing doorway, record what is happening now

Check whether the drawing shows the present opening and whether the household uses it as assumed. Note any changes since the plan, visible damage, an obstruction, a level change or a different route used from day to day.

My Foundation framework reads an opening alongside the surrounding condition and actual use. A door shown prominently on a drawing but rarely used should not be described as the family’s daily entry without checking.

If someone recommends changing the door or adding an object, ask what finding the recommendation addresses. Which location was established? Which interpretation is being applied? What remains uncertain? The remedies guide explains how to assess that reasoning.

For an occupied home, Property Vastu Diagnosis is the related assessment service. Detailed corrections and implementation are agreed separately; an enquiry does not commit you to buying a remedy.

Questions about a house’s main door

Which facing direction is best?

A broad facing label does not provide the doorway’s precise position or describe its conditions and use. The course’s own entrance charts distinguish positions within every cardinal group. Begin with the actual opening and the mapping method before asking for a property-specific recommendation.

Can I classify the doorway from a screenshot?

A screenshot may help explain the question, but assessment needs a reliable plan and orientation basis. If the opening appears close to a sector boundary, ask what measurement, centre convention and doorway-assignment rule were used. The diagrams alone do not resolve every boundary case.

Should a metal strip or colour be the first step?

First establish the finding and the purpose of any proposed intervention. Course materials discuss such practices, but a general table does not establish their suitability, installation details or expected outcome for your property.

What should I share to begin?

Send your city, whether the house is proposed or occupied, which doorway you mean and the decision you want help making. Mention whether a current plan and orientation information are available. We can then clarify the review scope and current fee.

The modern mapping explanation uses the MVDE course files Entrances and Grids, PDF pages 1 and 4–5, and Entrances Toilets Kitchen, pages 1, 4 and 6. Their substantial overlap is one teaching lineage, not independent confirmation. The N5 evaluations differ in the latter file’s pages 7, 11 and 12; a definitive rating table is therefore not supplied here.
